Erman Özgür (Partner)

Erman Özgür is specialized in international arbitration and energy law. He acts as counsel in commercial and investment treaty disputes (including both ad hoc – UNCITRAL – and institutional forms – ICC, SCC, LCIA). His experience in international arbitration spans disputes under sales contracts and investment treaty disputes under Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs). He provides consultancy on public international law, downstream energy law as well as oil & gas agreements (including oil & gas supply contracts and Production Sharing Agreements – PSAs). Erman also assists companies in the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards in Turkey. He advises companies on market and local content research, business development and contract negotiations in foreign markets and in Turkey.

Erman holds an LL.M from the University of Edinburgh (with Distinction). He completed a PhD on investment treaty arbitration at the the University of Dundee’s Center for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) as the recipient of the CEPMLP’s prestigious research scholarship. He also completed Research Fellowships on public international law at the Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights, the University of Helsinki, and at the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels. He currently teaches international investment law and arbitration and energy law & policy at Hacettepe and TOBB ETU Universities in Ankara.

Güneş Ünüvar (Of Counsel)

Güneş Ünüvar possesses specialized knowledge on international dispute resolution and, in particular, on investment treaty arbitration. He advises clients across a range of sectors on a variety of contentious and non-contentious matters of public international law.

Güneş is a Senior Research Fellow at Max Planck Institute for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law in Luxembourg as of February 2021 and is Of Counsel at Özgür & Ünüvar. He was a Carlsberg Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow at iCourts (2017-2021) and has taught a number of courses on economic law and constitutional law at the University of Copenhagen, Uppsala University and the University of Edinburgh. He has extensive knowledge and experience on investor-State disputes, having engaged in a number of disputes as counsel and advisor. He is currently a member of the Academic Forum for the Working Group III meetings under the auspices of UNCITRAL, addressing investor-State dispute settlement reform. He has previously held Visiting Researcher positions at the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels and Columbia Law School in New York City.

He holds a PhD from the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen. He obtained his LL.M. degree from the Institute for European Studies (IES), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and an LL.B. from the Faculty of Law, Bilkent University.
